Dear host family,

first of all I want to thank you for giving me the chance to get a member of your family for 10 months and also to give me the opportunity to join the australian life. This means so much to me, living a life as an exchange student in Australia. In the following text I want to give you an impression of me, my family and my live.

My name is Sophia and I am fifteen years old, but I will be sixteen (years old), when I come to Australia. I was born at the 13 th of June 1998 in Munich and now I live with my family in a little village called XX near XX in the south of Germany.
My family, that is: My mother C.V., my father F.M., my two brothers Alex and Philipp and our two rabbits.
My mother is from Peru. She is XX years old and spanish teacher, but she also takes care of the house and the family. She helps me, if I have problems or certain questions. Sometimes we are jogging or painting together.
My father Florian is XXyears old and works as a software developer by the company Intel. Unfortunatly he works very long, so he comes back late from work. Anyway if I have problems with physics we learn together and he always helps me.
The older of my two brothers, Alex, is twelve years old and goes to the same school I do. We often play soccer or watch soccer matches together, because we are big fans of the club „Werder Bremen“.
My smallest brother, Philipp, is only two years old, but very cute and he can already speak a bit, mostly spanish. We often play together, jump on our trampoline or I read him some book. He is also a big soccer fan.
Our two rabbits are called „Happy“ and „Mumu“. They are my best animal friends and they live free in our garden.
I get along very good with my parents and my brothers. I try to help them whenever it is possible. Often I help out in the kitchen, settign the table, or with the laundry, look after my little brother and tidy up my room. Indeed I love my family so much and you cannot put us all together in a room without having a really funny, good time.

My special characteristics are, that I am honest and reliable, because respecting each other is very important for me. Sometimes I am a little bit shy and a bit ambitious in things that have to do with school and marks. My friends say that I am a calm, friendly and sociable girl. My biggest strenghts are to be always there for them and help if they have some trouble.
I think, that I can handle very good to strange situations, because I know other cultures quite well.

As a child I didn’t go to a „normal“ kindergarden. I went to a „forest-kindergarden“, where we didn’t have any house to stay, but we walked in the forrest and searched a good place to eat. I think, that there my love for nature and animals began and was influenced a lot.

Now I am in year 10 of the Graf-Rasso-Gymnasium, where I am since 2009. I have been learning English for 5 years now, so I started in year 5. I am also learning latin and frech and I can speak spanish as well: my second native language.

We only live three kilometres away from my school, so I go to school by bike. I really enjoy it in the morning to get awake for sure. My favourite subjects are next to english maths, french and history, because I am really fascinated by other languages and I like to be inform about other countries and their history.

Within my school I am engaged for keeping the „attendance book“, for tutoring and last year helping younger pupils to do their homeworks. I really enjoy this work because I like dealing with kids. I also help the new pulips in year 5 to find their way round the school.
Being member of the ecomenical team for preparing the school church services, and of our Big Band as well, has been a great opportunity for me.

School starts at 7.55 am in the morning and ends at 1 pm. But two times a week I have school till 4.30 pm and on friday I go to the Big band. So on Friday I leave school at 2.15 pm.
Every two lessens, we have a break, during when we can eat, go outside and laugh a lot. So I really enjoy going to school, because I can meet my friends, laugh and simply have fun and it isn’t only a duty for me.

In my freetime I really like to read books, listen to the radio or make photos. My favourite book is „the hunger games“. Every friday I go horserinding. I really enjoy this and hope I can also go horseriding in Australia. That would be great! Horseriding means much to me, because I love animals very much andI have to work together with these animals: it is great! That isn’t something you do quite often. I also have clarinet lessons every week. Both the nature and music are very important for me and I really enjoy doing it.
I have been playing the clarinet for 4 years now. I started playing the clarinet in school. There we had a music class and everybody played an instrument. So the whole class took part in concerts or events. After two years this ended and I decided to go on with my clarinet.
Besides, I often meet friends, we go shopping, to the cinema, riding, swimming in our lake or we bake something together like cakepops or simpley cakes. Sometimes we also organize some Sleepover parties. They are quite important for me, because I can trust and tell them all my problems and aswell all the good things.
I also spend a lot of time with my family going hiking, swimming, bicycling, playing soccer and in the winter also skiing or ice skating. We are all big nature fans. This year in spring we climed a 2765 meters high mountain. That was awesome!

I often go to church, but not continously. In addition, it is a tradition in our family to go to church at christmas and eastern.

Here in Germany we have, because of the origin of my mother, such a big number of latinamerican friends and because of that we often go to typical latinamerica-events.
With only 17 years my mother left Peru and went to Russia to study there for six years. She told me quite a lot stories of her time there and how it is to live in a new country. This arouse my interest for other countries and cultures. I am still very impressed by my moms experiences.

During the holydays we travel a lot and so I have visited many other countries in Europe, for example France, Italy and Spain. There we went camping or we lived in a little bungalow near the sea. I took part in exchanges with france and england, aswell. So I went to London and Chambery and lived in my exchange partners houses. This experience was great, because I learnt to live alone without my family for one week. That was the beginning of thinking about going abroad for one year.
Every three years we go to Peru. The last time we went there, was this summer. We spend three months there, travelled a lot and also went to school.
I really like travelling and seeing other cultures and the peoples’ living conditions.

But I am also happy being at home. We live in a rented house in Emmering. Here we have a pretty big garden, where our rabbits are living. There we also play soccer or badminton or we work in our little vegetable garden. In our village we have a lot supermarkets and other shops. The best thing in this village is our little lake. In summer we can go swimming there and in winter ice skating. And of course we go tobogganing. Sometimes with friends or the family. My grandpa really loves it.

My grandpa and me, we have a special relationship: We go shoppping together, skiing or we learn for school. He really likes to refresh speaking englisch and traducing latin sentences.
My grandma doesn’t live as near as my grandpa so we don’t see us very often. She lives in a small town near the Alps, our nearest montains. So, after doing a long and tiring hiking tour, we go to my grandma and eat together. She cooks really good. Sometimes the whole family, including my grandma, goes hiking.
Although my cousins and my oncle live quite near, we don’t meet us very often. So we don’t have a really good realtionship, but when we meet us, we are very happy to see each other.
I almost don’t have relatives from my mothers’ side, because they all live in Peru, ther are only two. So we meet them quite often.
During our trip to Peru this year, we met many realtives, my cousins, my aunt and my oncle, great-grandmother and many more.

My plans for the time after my year abroad are firstly to finish school and secondly to study afterwards. I am not quite sure right now, what about to study study, but it will be something, where I have to work together in a team with others, where I can help animals or can contribute that they get the right help and where I can travel. I could imagine me as a biologist who is specialized in the living conditions of animals.
My aim is to study in Munich, but also to do a semester in an other country or city.

Probably you will ask yourself why I want to be an exchange student and what my motives and intentions in going abroad for one year are, live in an australian familiy and attend to a high school there.

I think such a trip is a unique chance, to experience the life in a strange country not as a tourist, but as a member of an australian family and pupil of a high school. In addition, it is a big? challenge, becuase you don’t know anybody, you are quite allone and you have to decide alon ewhich person you can trust and who is going to be your friend. I am sure that threr will be times where I wan to come back, but I am strong enough to manage them. And on this things you will grow.
I would like to get to now new things and try out new sports like surfing and also take part in some typical events. As well it is a good chance to make new contacs and make friends with teenagers from different countries. In addition I would like to see and learn most as possible of the special continent, Australia.

So I am expecting when staying in a foreign county:
⦁ to get in contact with an other culture and other ways of living
⦁ to meet people and gain new friends
⦁ to improve my abilities in speaking, understanding and writing an other language
⦁ to become more self confident and in a good way more independant
⦁ to make some contributions in Australia for a good image of Germany

I want to know Autralina better and I hope you can help me. I will do my best to make this year unique for both of us and I think that we can learn a lot of things about each other.
I am looking forward to get to know you and I am so greatful that you consider hosting me for one year.
So I hope I will hear from you soon.

Lovely greetings from Germany,

Sophia M.

Viel Erfolg,
Lisa
